In the picturesque town of West Arvada, the rolling fields of West Arvada Golden’s Fetch-a-Lot are home to the Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies (GRRR). Affectionately known as GRRR, this non-profit organization has been tirelessly working since 1996 to provide a second chance for golden retrievers in need.

Currently housing around 17 furry friends, with numbers fluctuating between 16 and 23, GRRR has successfully placed more than 3,500 golden retrievers in loving homes. In 2011, a generous donor made it possible for GRRR to establish its own home on a serene five-acre property, providing a safe haven for the dogs.

A team of over 150 dedicated volunteers forms the backbone of GRRR, contributing their time to various aspects of the organization, from fundraising to the essential task of dog walking. The volunteers form a tight-knit community, not only exercising the dogs but also investing time to understand and connect with them.

The adoption coordinator affectionately referred to as the “doggy matchmaker,” ensures that adopters go through a thorough screening process. Potential adopters undergo phone interviews, reference checks, and sometimes even home visits to guarantee a loving and suitable environment for golden retrievers.

Mary Kenton, the full-time caretaker often referred to as the “dog whisperer,” plays a pivotal role in the day-to-day operations. Her deep understanding of canine behavior and gentleness has earned her the title. GRRR has a reputation for excellence, with Kenton’s expertise helping dogs, including those with challenging pasts like Bentley, find their way to loving homes.

Bentley, a heartwarming success story, overcame heartworm and found a forever home at the age of 16. The organization’s commitment to providing medical care, including veterinary checks and treatments, is evident in its $100,000 annual budget.

Contrary to common misconceptions, GRRR’s medical expenses primarily cater to dogs aged five and younger. The organization’s strong foundation and widespread support allow it to extend help to golden retrievers from neighboring states, shelters, and even those who surrendered due to various hardships.

It introduces several heart-touching stories, from the resilience of a dog named Polo, who surrendered due to a severe skin infection, to the journey of Stella, who found solace at GRRR after a traumatic experience in a puppy mill.

The dedicated volunteers, along with Mary Kenton, create a nurturing environment for the dogs, offering love, veterinary care, and a chance for a new beginning. It beautifully captures the joy of these golden retrievers as they romp through the fields, showing that, beyond all else, these dogs simply want to be a cherished part of a family.

The Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies stands as a beacon of hope for golden retrievers in need, showcasing the power of compassion, community, and the enduring bond between humans and their furry companions.
